We welcomed Bob Dixon and his wife Melissa to our meeting. Mr. Dixon is currently serving in the MO. legislator as a Representative for the 140 District. In 2010 he will be running for the Senate seat in District 30. He is a big supporter of nursing and nurse practitioners. He briefly reviewed the history of nursing. He shared with his high regard for nurse practitioners. He and his family have had extensive personal experience with the care and caring given by nurse practitioners. Mr. Dixon emphasized to those present importance of nurse practitioners communicating with him and other Legislators. It is from his/their constituents that they are able to learn our real concerns, frustrations, needs, barriers to patients in seeking care and barriers to our practices. He explained how e mail is handled and filed for reference. Real examples/situations of the problems are always best to present. Email with bullet points is best. Phone calls to his/their offices are appropriate when a bill is about to be voted one. Representative Dixon finished by reviewing how bills progress though the House and Senate including how collaboration on a bill is accomplished. His presentation was excellent. He fielded many questions with direct answers.

Next Debra Frye from the State Board of Nursing addressed the group. She is the Practice Administrator. She used a very informational and educational PPP with her talk. She offered to share the PPP with us so we could make it available to all our members. She explained the process of a statute being passed thought the state House and Senate.. After the statute has been signed into law by the governor, the State Board of Nursing is charged with promulgating the rules to enforce the statute. The promulgation of a rules or rules is a very detailed, long process with opportunities for public comment. Other disciplines may also be involved in the writing and promulgating of the rules.

Both of these presentations were very informative and educational.
